Eighties pop sensation Limahl today revealed how he was desperate to be in TV show Reborn in the USA.
And the former Kajagoogoo singer from Wigan will be asking to appear in any follow-up series.
But he reckons the prime time ITV show, which has plucked 10 once-famous 80s crooners from obscurity to try to catapult them back to the top of the charts, just doesn't ring true.
"I would have loved to have been on Reborn in the USA," said Limahl, who's real name is Chris Hamill. "If they do a second series I'll be approaching Granada to ask to be on it. I would like this show to be successful, but I can't help wondering whether it's scripted."
The show shipped former stars Michelle Gayle, Gina G, Tony Hadley (Spandau Ballet), Dollar, Elkie Brooks, Haydon Eshun (Ultimate Kaos), Lee John (from Imagination) and Peter Cox (frontman of Go West) to the USA three weeks ago.
Each week one ego is voted off by means of a phone vote from British audiences after being nominated by the watching Americans the week before.
So far Gina, Elkie and Dollar have been booted off.
But Limahl, who found fame singing Too Shy and The Never Ending Story, reckons the show might be nothing more than a vehicle for launching a solo career for 20-year-old Haydon Eshun, who found fame as a child star with Ultimate Kaos.
He cheekily suggested: "It isn't fair to have Haydon on it – he's 20 years younger than some of the other artistes."
The ITV programme Popstars: The Rivals, which spawned Girls Aloud, caused controversy when Javine, one of the favourites to win a place in the band, didn't make the final cut, leaving many wondering whether the show was fixed.
Chris added that the bust-up between Dollar and Sonia didn't ring true – he says Sonia's "not a nasty piece of work," and that the show seemed almost wooden or even scripted.
"On the big shows like Never Mind the Buzzthingys and Have I Got News For You, the panellists know what the questions are going to be in advance, so I hope it's not like that," he said.
On Saturday's show, the former Spandau Ballet frontman Tony Hadley beat Elkie Brooks in the the viewer's vote to book his place back on the bus.
But Chris, who says he has been watching the show, didn't have a definite favourite. He added that if a second series of the show was made, he'd like to see artists like Hayzee Fantazee or Rick Astley on it – as they all hailed from the Wigan area. Chris, the son of a coal miner who went to Abraham Guest High School before he was expelled, was appearing in Southampton on Saturday night.
